Walking Towards Wellness: Exploring the Benefits of Outdoor Walk-and-Talk Therapy
Hi! I’m Kristy. I’m a licensed art therapist, mental health counselor and walk-and-talk therapist that utilizes nature, movement and creativity in my work with clients! This innovative approach to therapy combines the principles of traditional talk therapy with the healing power of nature and movement. As a walk-and-talk and art therapist in Maryland, I'm passionate about guiding clients through therapeutic journeys that unfold amidst the beauty of our state's landscapes.
What exactly is walk-and-talk therapy?
Walk-and-talk therapy offers a unique opportunity to break free from the confines of traditional therapy settings and embrace the natural world as a catalyst for healing. Whether strolling through a serene park or meandering along a tranquil trail, each step taken in nature becomes a step towards greater self-awareness, resilience, and well-being.
But walk-and-talk therapy isn't just about walking. Walk-and-talk is sometimes just being out in nature- sitting at a picnic table or a park bench with your therapist. Walk-and-talk therapy is not meant to be vigorous exercise. Walk-and-talk therapy is about engaging all the senses and allowing the environment to serve as a ‘co-therapist’.
When we refer to nature as a "co-therapist" in walk-and-talk therapy, we're acknowledging the profound impact that the natural environment can have on the therapeutic process. In traditional therapy settings, the therapist takes on the primary role of facilitating healing and guiding clients through their journey.
Nature acts as a silent but powerful presence, offering its own form of support, wisdom, and guidance to both the therapist and the client. It provides a nurturing and nonjudgmental space where clients can feel safe to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The sights, sounds, and sensations of the natural world can evoke deep feelings of calmness, connection, and inspiration, creating an optimal environment for therapeutic work to unfold.
Here are a few ways that nature can help us:
Stress Reduction: Nature has been shown to reduce stress levels and promote relaxation, creating a conducive environment for emotional exploration and healing.
Grounding: Being immersed in nature helps clients feel grounded and centered, allowing them to reconnect with themselves and find inner balance amidst life's challenges.
Mindfulness: The sensory-rich environment of nature encourages clients to be fully present in the moment, fostering mindfulness and awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.
Reflection: The natural world is full of metaphors and symbolism that can be used to explore clients' experiences and perspectives. For example, the changing seasons may represent cycles of growth and transformation, while a winding path may symbolize the journey of self-discovery.
How do I know that outdoor walk-and-talk therapy is right for me?
Think of the last time you carved time to take a leisurely stroll in a peaceful environment, without the sounds of work notifications going off on your computer or the distractions from your cell phone. I’m not talking about the last time you went outside for an intense workout or a vigorous hike. When was the last time you immersed yourself into nature, just because? How did it feel to take in the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of the sensory-rich environment? If you find yourself craving for more of a connection with nature and wanting more support in being present, I highly recommend giving outdoor walk-and-talk therapy a try.
And for those who are drawn to the creative arts, incorporating art therapy into outdoor walk-and-talk sessions can further enhance the therapeutic experience. With sketchbooks in hand and inspiration all around, clients can express themselves artistically amidst the beauty of the outdoors, deepening their connection to both nature and self.
What ages can participate in walk-and-talk therapy at Labyrinth Art and Wellness?

Can couples try walk-and-talk therapy?
Absolutely! Walk and Talk Therapy can be a beneficial option for couples seeking therapy together. Walking side by side in a natural setting can create a relaxed and open environment conducive to communication and connection. The movement involved in walking can also help to reduce stress and tension, allowing couples to engage in therapy in a more comfortable and natural way. During Walk and Talk Therapy sessions with couples, the therapist can facilitate conversations, provide guidance, and offer tools and strategies to improve communication, deepen connection, and address relationship challenges. Whether couples are seeking to strengthen their bond, resolve conflicts, or navigate life transitions, Walk and Talk Therapy can provide a unique and effective approach to couples therapy.
