As a parent, you want what is best for your child, especially at a time when they’re struggling and needing support. Perhaps your child or teenager has had trouble opening up to therapists or teachers in the past. Art therapy and walk-and-talk therapy offers a creative and relaxed approach to help children and teens express their feelings, overcome challenges, and build resilience.

Discover how art therapy can make a meaningful difference in your child’s life.

how art therapy can help your child

Art therapy is a therapeutic practice that uses evidence-based research methods through artistic activities as a means for individuals to express emotions, explore experiences, and work through psychological challenges. Licensed art therapists (that’s me!) go through rigorous training to learn how creative activities like drawing, painting, and sculpting, can help children and teens to communicate feelings that are difficult to articulate verbally. This process can reduce anxiety levels by providing a sense of control and empowerment over their emotions.

  • Emotional Expression: Helps children express feelings they may have trouble verbalizing.

  • Stress Relief: Provides a calming outlet for anxiety and stress.

  • Improved Communication: Enhances verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

  • Enhanced Self-Esteem: Encourages a sense of achievement and self-worth through creative accomplishments.

  • Coping Skills: Teaches problem-solving and coping strategies through creative processes.

  • Trauma processing: Provides a safe space to explore and make sense of difficult experiences at their own pace.

how outdoor walk-and-talk therapy can help your child

Outdoor walk-and-talk therapy is a form of therapy where sessions take place outdoors, typically while walking in a park on a paved path. This approach combines traditional talk therapy with the therapeutic benefits of being outside in nature and gentle movement, allowing your kiddo to engage in conversation and explore their thoughts and feelings in a relaxed and dynamic environment!

  • Reduced Anxiety: Being outside at a quiet park can lower anxiety levels and promote relaxation.

  • Enhanced Communication: Walking side-by-side can make conversations feel more natural and less confrontational.

  • Increased Engagement: The physical activity of walking gently can help children stay engaged and focused.

  • Connection with Nature: Being outdoors can naturally improve mood and overall well-being.

  • Improved Emotional Expression: The informal setting may help children open up more freely!

I believe that true change happens through collaboration!

While my primary focus is on your child during our art therapy sessions, I understand the crucial role parents and caregivers play in their journey.

If you’re interested in your child beginning art therapy, walk-and-talk therapy, or a blend of both: we will start with a complimentary introductory phone call. This initial conversation allows us to get to know each other and determine if I am a good fit for you! I’ll share what to expect in your first few sessions, supplies that I recommend having if your virtual, and what else is needed to get you started.

If we both decide to move forward, our next step is to have a parent-only intake session. During this session, we'll gather comprehensive background information, discuss your child’s strengths, and explore your what you hope your child will feel throughout their time in therapy. I'll also go over our practice policies and answer any questions you may have.

Following the parent intake session, your child will participate in weekly individual art therapy sessions over the course of the next 4 weeks. These sessions can happy virtually, in-person in an office, or outdoors! Sessions will focus on building rapport, setting goals, and using art as a powerful tool for emotional expression.

After these initial four weekly sessions, we'll schedule regular check-in meetings, or how I like to call them: “Loved-One Check-Ins”. These meetings are designed for parents and therapist to connect, discuss progress, adjust goals if needed, and collaborate on strategies! Your insights are incredibly valuable in ensuring our therapy remains effective and tailored to your child's needs.
