Unveiling the Power of Art Therapy for Couples
What to Expect in an 80-Minute Art Therapy Session
Check-in and Goal Setting:
Begin with a check-in where each partner shares their recent experiences and feelings.
One partner might express feeling stressed due to work deadlines and long hours, particularly because of a major project at the office. Meanwhile, the other partner mentions feeling a sense of longing for connection, noting that they've been craving quality time together amidst their busy schedules.
Checking in on glimmers: To delve deeper, I ask each partner to reflect on moments in the past month when they felt truly connected, which I like to call relationship ‘glimmers’: glimmers are moments or experiences in a relationship that signify connection, intimacy, or positive interaction between partners.
They might recall a spontaneous date night they had, a heartfelt conversation they shared over breakfast, or a cozy evening spent cuddled up watching their favorite movie. These moments of connection serve as reminders of the love and bond they share, even amidst life's busyness.
Intention setting for the session: Based on these insights, we set a goal for the session, such as finding ways to prioritize quality time together despite their hectic schedules or exploring strategies to manage work-related stress more effectively.
Art-Making Exercises: The majority of the session will focus on creating art therapy interventions and art making.
For a couple struggling with communication, we might engage in a collaborative art project where each partner contributes to a piece of artwork without verbal communication. This exercise encourages nonverbal expression, trust-building, and understanding of each other's perspectives. Through the process of creating together, couples often find new ways to connect and communicate, discovering shared meanings and insights that might have been challenging to express verbally.
Alternatively, if a couple is working on trust issues, we might use art materials to represent their vulnerabilities and strengths, fostering empathy and connection. As each partner uses their art materials to represent their feelings and experiences, they are invited to share how they perceive themselves and each other within the context of the art piece. This tactile and metaphorical approach allows for a deeper exploration of emotions and relational dynamics, facilitating greater understanding and empathy between partners.
Reflection and Insights: Towards the end of the session, we reflect on the artwork created and the process involved.
For example, if the collaborative art project revealed differences in communication styles, we discuss how these differences can be acknowledged and bridged in the relationship. This reflection helps the couple gain insights into their dynamics and identify areas for growth.
Monthly Homework Task: Monthly homework ‘events’ will be determined collaboratively at the end of session.
As a monthly homework task, I might assign the couple to create a vision board together, incorporating images and words that represent their shared goals and aspirations. This activity encourages them to envision their future together and fosters collaboration and mutual understanding.
Additionally, couples might be tasked with scheduling regular date nights to prioritize quality time together, reinforcing the importance of connection outside of therapy sessions.
Regular check-ins can be crucial for maintaining the health and vitality of any relationship. My monthly benefits check-ins provide you and your partner with an opportunity to reflect on your progress, address any challenges, and set new goals for the future. These check-ins serve as a valuable tool for ongoing growth and development within your relationship.
